As part of the celebration of the National Maritime Week, the Southwestern College of Maritime Business and Technology, as a response to the invitation of the National Seafarer’s Day Committee led by Stella Maris Philippines, and Philippine Coast Guard, conducted several activities from September 16 -27, 2024.
This year’s theme, “MARINONG FILIPINO: LIGTAS NA PAGLALAYAG” honors Filipino seafarers and promotes safety in the maritime industry.
The week began with a fun and competitive Maritime Quiz Bee on September 16, in the Main Building, involving 14 participants. The results showcased the talents of various students, with the Burford hailed as the champion section represented by Rhyzel Rabino and Matt Andred Mulla. The Orion section secured the 1st place, represented by Joshua F. Ramos and Cedrick Rey, while the Plimsoll section finished as the 2nd place, with Weshley Guaves and Chester Castro.
Meanwhile, on September 17, college students showcased their artistic skills on the Poster Making Contest which was held at the Annex Covered Court. Daniel Macaraig emerged as the champion, while Juven Alba secured the 1st place, and Weshley Guaves took the 2nd place.
One of the highlights of the said celebration was the Maritime Safety Symposium via Microsoft Teams with C/E Rodrigo Pantoja as the speaker. The said symposium was attended by the first year to fourth year maritime students from both Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering. It focused on critical topics such as human error, equipment failures, and environmental factors that can cause maritime accidents, providing helpful tips on preventing accidents and promoting safety at sea.
Moreover, as part of the activities on September 21, Student Body Organization, Southwestern Crew of Cadets (SCC) and first year college students, superintended by Sir Jonny Magluyan and Ma’am Judith Mae R. Zamora, participated in a Coastal Clean-Up Drive at Port of Calapan. This event was part of International Coastal Clean-Up Day that emphasized the importance of keeping coastlines clean and protecting the environment.
The 25th National Maritime Week was a meaningful celebration of Filipino seafarers, focusing on the importance of safety and sustainability in the maritime industry. Through various activities, the event demonstrated how seafarers contribute to a safer and more sustainable future for our oceans, reminding us of their vital role in protecting the marine environment.
