“𝐑𝐞-𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟐𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝟓.𝟎 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬”

With the theme “𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐇𝐲𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬” the faculty of Southwestern College of Maritime, Business and Technology conducted five days In-Service Training as preparation for the opening of second semester for the school year 2023-2024. It helps teachers to acquire new understanding and instructional skills to develop their effectiveness in the classroom.

Spearheaded by the Program Chair of BS Marine Transportation, Capt. Rey Mark D. Opeňa, comprehensively discussed the curriculum transition from Joint CHED-MARINA Memorandum Circular 𝑱𝑪𝑴𝑴𝑪𝟎𝟏 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 Requirements. This includes crafting the Detailed Teaching Syllabus and Assessment Plan which serves as guide of the teachers in delivering the lesson. Further, a template for presentation of lessons and grading system were also given and explained so that teachers have standard uniformity of materials.

Teachers were also reminded and enlightened with the 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 and introduces to the 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝟓.𝟎 by the Program Chair of BS Marine Engineering, C/E Erdie P. Taganguin. It was emphasized that the discussion must be student-centered where teachers will act as facilitators only. Students should be taught skills which they can use in real life thus currently preparing them for jobs that don’t yet exist . . . using technologies that haven’t been invented . . .in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.”

Dealing with 21st Century learners is inclined with being adept with technology. Since traditional teaching methods seem to be not aligned with the characteristics of learners of today, it is a must that teachers should be well-acquainted with new ways of delivering the lessons with the involvement of online platforms. Adopting in this change, SCMBT uses 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒐𝒇𝒕 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒔 that serve as the learning management system for the students and teachers.

To better navigate the Microsoft Teams, Dr. Neil Balba initiated the exploration of its features. Detailed by detailed, he explained what are things that can be done in the MS Teams. This includes creating a Team for each class or subject of the teacher, adding the students to the created team, scheduling of classes, uploading resources, making and scheduling of activities and quizzes and many more. After a deliberate discussion, Dr. Balba asked the teachers to have a 15-minute discussion using the Microsoft Teams. Every after discussion, he gave valuable feedback that could further boost the performance of the teachers. Meanwhile, he also highlighted the context of hyflex learning. Hyflex combines the terms “𝒉𝒚𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒅” and "𝒇𝒍𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆”. Hybrid learning is integrating synchronous and asynchronous learning, and all students are expected to undergo the same. On the contrary, the idea of hyflex is that students are given choices on how they will participate in the course, whichever is suited to them.

As our society’s needs change from time to time, SCMBT will keep abreast of being flexible to meet what is needed from our learners.
