In a remarkable showcase of ingenuity, Senior High School students from Southwestern College of Maritime, Business and Technology have secured 5th place in the esteemed STEMazing competition as part of the Division Scilympics 2024.

The team, composed of talented young minds 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗻, 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗶 𝗔𝗰𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗮 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗢𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼, presented an innovative project related to “Time Technology Aided Progress for Calapan City.” Their project, a 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗠𝗦 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, specifically targets the frequent flooding challenges faced by the city.

The inspiration for their project stemmed from the recurrent flooding in Calapan City, notably highlighted by the flash flood caused by Typhoon Nona in December 2015, which devastated homes and claimed lives. Recognizing the need for timely alerts, the team aimed to develop a reliable system to inform residents of impending floods, underlining the importance of quick notifications in ensuring community safety.

Meanwhile, another SCMBT team, consisting of Vaughn Chester Enrile, Syryll Monsanto, and Kimberly Shane Palaran, focused on the pressing issues of waste management and pollution. Their project, titled “𝗦𝗦𝗦 (𝗦𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺): 𝗔 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀,” is designed to enhance waste segregation and promote sustainable practices within the community.

Both teams were guided by Mr. Bern E. Alvis and Ma’am Joycel Cultura, who provided invaluable support throughout the competition.

Winners of the said competition were Holy Infant Academy as champions; followed by Oriental Mindoro National High School in 2nd and 3rd place, and Ceriaco Abes Memorial National High School in 4th place. While SCMBT finished in 5th place among 15 competing teams, both of their projects received commendations for their innovative approaches to tackling local issues.
